Been wanting to get a bit creative since sometime? Then this lockdown period is the right time for you to start on a few creative and crafty projects, and what better than some DIY ideas from Fashion Suggest, especially from those old clothes that you have been wanting to clear away from your wardrobe!
These are super simple and indulgent and will leave you wanting to explore more. So, check out these easy peasy DIY craft ideas from old clothes.
1. Make Dupatta from your old clothes
Have a bunch of old sarees that has seen better days, waiting for redemption in your mom’s wardrobe? Then this lockdown period, unleash the inner ‘designer’ spirit in you to create a few dupattas from them, for you to sport in the days ahead.
Silk sarees are ideal to create some elegant dupattas that can be draped with lehengas, salwars and even amp up simple skirts.
You could mix and match a couple of the old sarees to create a patchwork or stick to just one and have a monochrome design dupatta. Using saree pallus with monochrome patterns can create vibrant and contrasting dupattas.
To add some extra glam, you could even add pom poms or beads or mirror works from your old or damaged clothes, to the end of the dupattas.

2. Craft your own handbag with unused clothes
Planning to throw away those old pair of jeans or that torn floral shirt. Here’s a better idea! Why not upcycle them to a handbag or even a shopping bag. Durable, eco-friendly and incredibly easy to make, you can even gift them to your loved ones as well. Just some basic sewing skills is all you need. And to add some accents to it, try a hand painted one, sequins, lace, embroidery, beads, buttons or even a simple ribbon.
You could even do a small patchwork using different cloth materials to give it a more vibrant or colourful look.
3. DIY Fabric Book cover
Quite a trend these days, fabric book covers are ideal for your favourite novel, a simple notebook, journal or even your personal diary. With a few basic things like the fabric of your choice (that is ideally an old piece of clothing that you have been wanting to throw away but has been holding on to), needle, some thread or fabric glue, scissors and scale, it will be a great project for the little ones at your homes too, especially when they are all set to go back to school soon!
4. How to design Mobile Phone Cover with clothe pieces?
Of course, we are not saying that your latest iPhone needs to be covered up in some old cloth! But how about giving it a fashionable makeover with a fabric twist for a short while, especially when you can’t find the right one for your phone?! Moreover, these phone covers can not only act as a protective covering for your camera lens (the part that is left uncovered by the phone case) but you could even add a small pocket in the side of it to tuck in the earphones. They will be perfect, especially, when you have a habit of dropping in your phone with your keys and other knick-knacks together into your hand bag.
Slightly stretchy fabric like t-shirt material or denim is ideal to create a DIY phone cover since it would be flexible (to remove and put in) as compared to the other kinds of fabric. To glam it up, you could choose printed fabrics or add buttons or sequins to it.
5. DIY Laptop/Tablet Sleeve
Laptop or tablet sleeves aren’t usually very easy on our pockets, hence, to protect these gadgets that we hold very dear to our life, this lockdown period let’s get a bit creative and productive!
To make a padded sleeve, you might have to use an extra fabric liner or something like a foam material, or you could even sew together a couple or more layers of fabric inside to give it the appropriate thickness. Quilt or felt material is also good, if you have it handy at home, if not just stick to using an extra measure of thicker fabric.
You could make one that’s open on one end or have a flap with a press button or Velcro.
Tip: Add accents like lace in case you are using a monochrome fabric to create a unique laptop sleeve design.
6. DIY Fabric Tea Coasters
Add colour to your chai times with vibrant DIY cloth tea coasters, that you can show off to your family, friends and loved ones (they are even perfect and inexpensive yet very personal gifting ideas as well).
Ideally, pick thicker fabrics so that you will not have to insert an extra fabric liner or felt material when making a coaster. You could mix and match your old clothes to create a colourful and patchy pattern for your coasters (and it does not even have to match to make a set) and can have individual designs according to your liking.

7. Make creative face masks at home
Now that protective face masks have more or less become a norm, why not try out a DIY cloth Face mask, that is reusable and breathable. It goes without saying that the fabric to choose should be slightly thicker (and not sheer or porous kind) to ensure safety and comfort at the same time.
To create a face mask, all you would need is some thread, a needle and elastic band (if you have any at hand) or you could stick to using the strips of fabric for the ear band.
