Rain Coats or Rain Jackets?
Usually there are two categories of people.
First being, the usual bike (or bicycle) rider, they ideally need a rain jacket as well a rain trouser.
Second, the one who travels mostly by car or walks around, and for those of them, the perfect pick would be a trench style long rain coat or a fisherman style rain coat.
This guide aims to help in buying the right rain-wear for men, be it rain jacket or coats, and will give you an idea about the different factors you need to keep in mind when picking one. And of course, if chosen well, you can look stylish in one too!
Rain Coat Buying Guide for Men
You definitely don’t want rain spoiling your entire day. So how to make sure you are buying the right rain wear?
Check out the few things you should keep in mind when shopping for rain coats.
Material
There are usually 2 types of material used for rain coats- water resistant & waterproof.
Water resistant material is usually a material (like nylon or polyester) coated with a water repellant finish that can withstand a limited amount of precipitation. But is not suitable for heavy rainfall and water would eventually seep in when under heavy rain or if you stay in rain for a prolonged period.
On the other hand, waterproof material means water does not seep in. These have a membrane coating like GORE-TEX, eVent, Tyvek, Hyvent etc.
Purpose
Ideally it is better to choose waterproof material for raincoats but the degree or the layering type you should choose is largely dependent on the purpose for which you intend to use them. Usually there are different types like 2, 2.5 and 3 layer raincoats. These raincoats have a standard laminated layer as well as membrane layer and for 3 layers, the third one is usually a fabric layer, offering you very high degree of protection in rains.
If you intend it as rain jacket to be used for a normal purpose (for traveling around the town) you can choose a 2 layer one. A 2.5 or 3 layered ones are more suitable for high intensive and very high intensive activities respectively and they are expensive than the usual ones.
Size of the Hood
Imagine having to play or readjust the hood every now and then when you are out in the rain. If you are looking for one to wear when riding a bike or bicycle, choose one with a helmet compatible hood and fits perfectly.
Pockets
Definitely worth investing in a rain coat or jacket that has one or more inner pockets to keep your phone, wallet and keys safely without having to worry about them getting all wet and soggy.
Lightweight & Compact
During the rainy season or when you are out hiking, most often you tend to pack your rain coats in your shoulder bag or backpack. Imagine having to carry around a bulky and heavy raincoat. Hence it is advisable to choose lightweight and compact raincoat.
Wrist Closures & Zippers
To ensure full protection in the rain, choose a raincoat that has wrist closures to clock out any water getting through your wrist, especially when riding bikes or bicycle. Similarly, make sure you opt for coats with laminated and quality zippers to keep the wearer dry.
Armpit Vents
When choosing a rain coat for jacket for high intensity activities, preferably get one with excellent ventilation to ensure better air circulation. This is especially in the case of 2.5 or more layers. There are several styles that come with zippered armpit vents.
Fit & Length
When it comes to picking the right size or fit of the rain coat, remember that you would be wearing it over layers of clothing. Pick a fit that is not too snug or too loose. Try on the coat and see if you can touch the opposite shoulder blades (like giving yourself a hug). Stretch your arm up and see how far it rises up.
Similarly, pick a sleeve length that is not too short or too long.
Shorter, waist size rain jackets appear more stylish but the length of the rain coat typically depends on the purpose or how you are going to use it. For example, are you a bike rider, choose one that is waist size along with a rain trouser. But if you are someone who mostly walks around, ideally choose one that is mid thigh or calf length like the trench coat style.
Quality & Durability
It’s always advisable to invest in a good quality rain coat that would be durable especially if you wear if often.
Color
It’s better to choose neutral shades like blacks, grays, beige, when it comes to rain coats and jackets since they work well with most of the outfits and are very functional colors. But if you are looking for something more stylish, opt for shades like dark blues, red etc.
